Alice Cooper - Raise Your Fist And Yell (1987)

So, I maybe crucified for not featuring Cooper's earlier works, but instead focusing on his late '80s trash. Sure, Cooper wins no real points for vomiting out such middle of the road rock, it's barely metal, even it's message of rebellion is a watered down protest, nothing too dissimilar to what Twisted Sister offer, yet without the meat. Strange when you consider that as a teenage metal fan obsessed by blood, gore and fantasy, Alice Cooper and his theatrical show of horror never really appealed, and I guess that his image always remained more important than the music, which was often overshadowed by his guillotines and skeletons. I heard the strains of 'Freedom' on the Friday Rock Show hosted by Tommy Vance, was mildly impressed by muscle man Kane Robert's and his solo's, but 'Lock Up' certainly puts pay to any serious attempts at inspiring rock, tragic it certainly is.

Alice Cooper has somehow made a career out of shady love songs, and tracks which border on horror but come across more like whimpering dogs, put Kiss in this bracket too, but I guess his myth has always saved him, and certainly back in the '80s parents always feared such theatrics, but unfortunately, even the young metal fans even grew tired of such pompous, weightless flights of fancy and instead moved on to bands like Slayer, Possessed and Death, however, those that remained in the basement of Mr Cooper would be force-fed on a number of shock rockers such as the whining 'Give The Radio Back'. Surely such lyrics must have taken seconds to write ? I'm going to be kind...musically many of the tracks open promisingly...then Alice comes in.

5/10
