The Hard Corps - Def Before Dishonor (1991)

A friend once commented on this record that it's so cool it wears shades! Some won't be impressed by the rap-metal crossover, but it almost works here, despite the album disappearing into obscurity and the band appearing as nothing more than a Mordred-cum-funk metal rip-off, but it's not sickly like Ignorance and the likes, instead it's Run DMC, Public Enemy super-charged by pumping guitars, this debut record offering thirteen cuts from band members Rev Kev, Major Kutt, Machine Gun Kelly, Dirty Bob, The Beast and Maestro K.O., who aren't actually as annoying as they look.

There are some catchy tunes on offer, albeit using rather well-used samples backed by RUN DMC style chants, not surprising then that Jam Master Jay has an involvement here in production. It's certainly not as cool or as diverse as the Beastie Boys, but the jazzy '3 Blind Mice', soulfully catchy 'Oh Yeah' and interesting covers of 'Back In Black' and 'Why Cant We Be Friends' will certainly leave any fan of this kinda stuff very satisfied. If you love Mordred, then Hard Corps just might surprise you, and the slobbering rumble of 'The Dirtster' is certainly different. Somehow, The Hard Corps remain authentic in a field of great pretenders.
