Obituary - Cause Of Death (1990)

There's no denying that 'Cause...' is a ghoulish record, bathed in blood, and grinding like a torture rack, but there's also no denying that the record isn't a patch on the 'Slowly We Rot' debut and lacks the sheer terror the debut record caused, and quickly the band would decline, regrouping to produce the more polished 'World Demise' (not reviewed) and a few other mediocre records. 'Cause...' is more of a mid-tempo assault, Tardy still has those dry, fiery lungs but again, I find myself going back to the horrifying debut when the band were loose, raw and angry with the world, when they somehow had the ability and magic to make zombies seem so frightening, whereas 'Cause...', although more mature, lacks the pace and aggression of 'Slowly...' and I'm wondering that if it weren't for Tardy's graveled tonsils, this would just sound like any other Floridian death metal record from the time when endless summer's produced a whole state of similar sounding grunters.

The cover of Celtic Frosts 'Circle Of Tyrants' is a little pointless, but admittedly the guitars are strong and fuzzed, 'Body Bag', 'Chopped In Half' and 'Turned Inside Out' would no doubt have had death head's salivating, but the reality is, I expected more from this doomscape, and at the end remain slightly unfulfilled despite the immense drums and smothering riffs. Even so, it's better than most records but the debut was a lot to live up to.

7.5/10
