White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol 1 (1992)

White Zombie, somewhere between the 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and a horde of other video nasties, with Slayer riffs. This unkempt bunch made quite as name for themselves in the '90s, even more so when front man Rob Zombie went on to carve an admirable solo career and also dabble in direction of horror movies.

'La Sexorcisto...' isn't the bands debut, 'Make Them Die Slowly' was a far sleazier affair, but this b-movie soundtrack does well to mingle groovy thrash, road movie screams, hip white-trash gurglings, plenty of film samples and riffs to shake to. I guess that without the make-up, without the masked go-go facade, and psychobilly-hillbilly slasher film-a-tronics, this would be reasonable ordinary, and I guess it does begin to grate as the album shifts along, but if Charles Manson were to record a metal album, this might be it, caught somewhere between a lost horizon of groovy, swinging, dust-disturbing psychedelia and real metal, Zombie's vocals providing the perfect soundtrack, giving the listener much to indulge, from the hip 'Thunderkiss 65', the swirling 'Black Sunshine' and crackling, alien landscapes created by the plethora of other beastly, martian invaders.

I must admit that I never stuck to White Zombie, this by far being my favourite soundtrack from the band, but if you've seen films such as 'Death Race 2000' then this is where White Zombie are at on this platter. Certainly one big horror groove that melts the frolics of Russ Meyer's big-breasted sleaze with crusty, denim-wearing, gasoline drinking metal.

6.5/10
