Cirith Ungol - One Foot In Hell (1986)

The band's 'Frost & Fire' record was a bit of a lightweight let-down, but pleased to say that 'One Foot...' is a return to fiery form, the vocals of Baker rise like a slithering serpent above the amazing guitar waves, and it's this hard 'n' heavy guitar grind and dramatic vocal delivery that makes this record such a fine, pure metal record. Many may look back on this record and find it cheesy, but the mid '80s were always about this kind of dark fantasy, and as 'Blood And Iron' shuffles in and the armies chant to the heavens with spears and shields. It's that kinda record...you can hear so much influence in 'The Fire', the clattering drums and solid riffing, you can't go wrong and I defy any true metal head to criticize this album, because back in the '80s if you wanted real metal, these kind of lp's often slipped by the wayside and I'm not sure that cd will do them any favours, so grab your old record deck, get some huge speakers, turn the light off and slap on Cirith Ungol for a sturdy lesson in metal.

7.5/10
