Slayer - God Hates Us All (2001)

Okay, so here we have Slayer attempting 'Reign In Blood' resurrection once again, digging bloody soil with a broken shovel, lacking the heart, soul, mind and velocity of 1990 to even come close to that glorified sound of hellish gore that left them when Dave Lombardo got up and went walkies. 'God Hates Us All' may have attempted to have been the soundtrack to political disarray, the terrorist attacks on New York, and general hate-filled campaign for the kids, but to me it comes across as Slayer-does-Slipknot, an almost laughable mess combining Kerry King's wrestling anthems ('Here Comes The Pain'), with the usual three-minuted blurs which continue to imitate the pace of 'Reign In Blood' and yet somehow come across like a Slayer tribute band. It's cringe worthy to listen to Tom Araya's failure at reaching the high notes, as the predictable chug of the intro rushes in, 'Disciple' attempts such aggression but is missing so much of Slayer's earlier demonic class that as each of these chug fests roll by I'm just left wondering why the band have resorted to one track titles which leave you imagining burly, made-up wrestlers marching into the ring instead of grim portrayal of the black valleys of Hell. 'Bloodline', 'Exile', 'Threshold'...it's just boring guys, it's not scary anymore and those Slipknot support slots have done you no favours whatsoever. Deep down in the caverns of Hell there are Slayer fans who still support you but as every release hits their decks they are forever running backwards to the times of old when the very mention of the name Slayer sent a shudder through the spine of the Earth, but now, it barely forces a flutter.

5.5/10
