Believer - Dimensions (1993)

This is easily one of the most refreshing thrash albums to emerge in the last few decades, a record that slipped by the wayuside due to the advent of grunge. Christian metallers they may be, but Believer have taken prgressive thrash to new limits, combining the guile and oddness of Voivod - particularly in the vocal sneer - and some extraordinary structures. 'The Lie' is possibly one of the only metal tracks you'll hear that incorporates a violin and yet the song remains startlingly catchy whilst bewildering as the hissed viocals are caressed by an operatic injection, bringing to mind Celtic Frost on 'Into The Pandemonium.' Believer are one of the most unpredicyable bands, effortlesly shifting gears and styles, whether it's in the form of 'Gone' or the more direct 'Shadow Of Death'. 'Dimensions' is just one of those clever records that defies categorisation, 'What Is...' boasting unusual structure and bewildering levels of complexity. This is a terrifying experience that one can only marvel at. It may take a few listens but just let yourself be swept up by the tide that is 'Dimensions.' There was life in the '90s after all! 8.5/10
