Rampage - Veil Of Mourn (1988)
Right, the vocalist clearly can't sing, and has trouble in finding an identity, let alone his range on this record, which does sound as if it's been recorded in a shed. Of course, like a lot of '80s thrash records there is something endearing about it, although the echo on the drums is almost as ear splitting as the vocals. I know little about these guys, and find the album artwork appalling, maybe it's the 'figure' in the foreground which looks like a huge finger, even so, this is basement Slayer at times, although I've read a couple of reviews which describe this as progressive thrash but I'm not really hearing that. This has a basement feel in every sense, and if you can distance yourself from the singer who seems to spend too much time shifting between Tom Araya growls and cringe worthy warbles, then you might find something to hang on to, but any band with a song called 'Producer's Edge' really needs to get back in the studio and have a rethink. This is the sort of recording I'd expect if I'd sent £2.50 off for a demo back in the '80s.
5/10 9and that's being kind!)
